Data Engineering, architecture and analytics (MacMillan Learning) 2017 - 2019

In 2017, cofounded the Data Operations and Data Warehouse team for the Business Systems program at Macmillan Learning. This team crossed multiple functional groups included Sales (Salesforce.com), physical and digital product development/asset management and E-Commerce (SAP Hybris). A process of lean requirements gathering helped us through a variety of solutions architectures until we finally settled on a simple data repository solution using Amazon Redshift, raw data analysis with Amazon Redshift Spectrum and ETL with Lambda. We wanted to focus on the data and the business value rather than a complex architecture for the early phases of the project.

The company already has a number of highly-skilled data analyst. Most come from a background in physics and have expertise in R. Analytics and regression modelling with R, Python and SQL were available to us in the early stages.

Onyx Decommission (Macmillan Learning) 2016-2017

The Onyx platform was implemented and 19 years before the decommission project began. Originally a CRM system, Onyx had been customized over two decades to function as a central service bus, digital and physical product fulfillment system, product database, customer registration and digital product platform backend.

Onyx was in some connected to almost every system in the Macmillan Learning infrastructure. That means in the process of decommission we were able to improve and enhance most of our business platforms and 17 major business services.

Replacements services were created using Amazon Serverless technologies, WSO2 Data Services Layer, Salesforce and R Studio Server.

The mandate was for the system to be removed by midnight December 31 . At its largest, the team consisted of 43 people spanning across four continents and countries (US, UK, Argentina and India) from every Macmillan partner as well as multiple independent consultants. The teams included Business Systems, Operations, Engineering, Quality Assurance, Development and more than a few jacks-of-all-trades.

The project was one of the largest cross-functional initiatives in Macmillan’s recent history. By November, the team had created the future state of Macmillan Learning live in a lower tier. The team then re-released all the deployments again to ensure that the entire system could be deployed again without serious error. The team conducted dress rehearsal releases to have the deployment process in muscle memory for the actual deployment.

Deployment of replacement services and decommission of Onyx took place overnight from December 21 into December 22nd with QA sign-off in the morning.

Removal of the Onyx system cleared the path for me to manage the implementation of the company’s first big data platform in Amazon Redshift. The company now has the benefit of a fast, columnar data platform and conducts (predictive) analysis using R and Python.
